The Print Group Australia recently designed and printed the 2014 yearbook for Kingston College. The college was looking for a new updated design that was fun, colourful and showcased the school in a professional manner. They provided the artwork for the cover, which was designed by one of their students and the internal text pages were designed by The Print Group Australia.
Starting with an initial appointment, we provided samples of similar products that we had designed and printed, and reviewed the past year books for the school. In the initial stage, it’s important for us to get a real understanding of what the client is looking for. From this initial brief, we provided a concept proof to the college with our design intent outlined which discussed our concept:
Keeping the page design fresh and bright without clutter.
Keeping the text and images on a white background, as it makes it much easier to read and allows the colours and photos to really take centre stage. This way the focus is on the content (text and images) without too many background graphics to distract the eye.
Focusing on a hero shot that draws attention to the page and offering a 3D like effect with box graphic and fun note graphics (…teamwork! …well done!). These fun note graphics can be used to make statements throughout the yearbook or showcase student names.
The graphic used on the School Captain’s Report represents the bird in their school logo and will be applied to all general focus pages. Each additional section will have a custom graphic to flow with the theme of that section (ie. dolphin for sports). Using a singular graphic for each section helps keep a clean and uncluttered design throughout.
Each section will continue with the theme of different colours.
Offering a methodical approach to the design, with supplied content and photographs, we designed the yearbook sections at a time. By designed and proofing in sections, this allowed for a smoother artwork approval process and avoided any untimely delays before print.
The final product was the 72pp A4 yearbook with 4pp cover, printed full colour throughout. The cover was printed on 250gsm gloss art board and gloss celloglazed and the inside pages were printed on 130gsm gloss art stock. The book was saddle-stitched to finish.
